DIY Spring Decor: The Carrot Pillow

Everybody loves throw pillows, but we also know that the beautiful ones are a bit pricey. So I’ll show you how to create beautiful throw pillows that would be a perfect fit for your spring and Easter decor.

Start with a plain simple pillow case in a solid color – white, beige or light yellow might be perfect for the season. Also, get some fabric scraps in shades of orange and honey yellow, to create the carrots. As for the texture, my fabric was polar fleece, which is very soft and a bit fluffy, but you could also use felt by the yard. A green yarn is also needed for the leaves, so it should be a fresh and bright shade of green.

First, draw the carrots on the fabric scraps. You can draw it by hand or you could print the following pattern on an A4 page and use it for your pillow instead:

It’s on you to decide over the number of carrots to use, depening on the size of the pillow case and the fabric scraps on hand. My pillowcase was 15 in long by 15 in wide, which was enough for six carrots.

Cut down the carrots from the fabric scraps and place them on the pillowcase alternating colors and shades. You can place them in two lines or randomly or in any other combination you like.

Next step is to use the green yarn in order to create the leaves: roll the thread on your fingers a few times then cut it, and add it on the top of the carrots, overlapping the yarn with the fabric. Then you’ll need to secure each carrot with a couple of pins, to make them stay in place while sewing.

Here comes the sewing part, which I prefer to do with a sewing machine. If you don’t have one, you can go further with the project by sewing on hand. Or maybe you could try a glue gun, but I’m not sure a glue gun would do especially if you have kids or pets around that tear down your pillow pile on regular basis.

Chose a thread in a different blocking color for sewing – like brown or red – because it will make your carrots. This contrast, along with those curved lines on the sides, will make your carrots look more real and add depth to their appearance. And the last seam should be a decorative one – a zig zag stich on the top of the carrots, just under the leaves.

The next step after sewing the carrots is to trim their leaves by cutting the green yarn in different lengths, so they could stand for fresh carrot greenery.

One more step and your easter throw pillow it’s over: turn it inside out and iron it before putting it to work in your livingroom.

This is how my carrot pillow looks in the end!
