How to Turn Common Jars into Exquisite Decorative Containers

Get them out of the pantry and let them shine! Turn common jars into exquisite containers with this 20-minutes DIY project!

I’ve been saving jars for years, since I’ve started to can my own food. But beside canning, I have to admit that I have a passion for jars, so I’m some kind of a collector. I have small jars and big jars, square, round and long, so you could say there’s a worldwide gathering of jars in my pantry.

Now it’s time to put them to work, and their task is not about canning. I needed some containers for my DIY stuff, so customizing some jars was the right thing to do, since I already have them.

Let’s me show you what I did!

What You Need

First, get some jars and clean them well, and be careful to clean their lids too. Also, find some furniture knobs in any design that you like. As for the screws, be careful to take shorter screws, as the knobs will be placed on a surface that is much thinner than furniture. Briefly, the screw shouldn’t be longer than the hole of the knob.

For painting, choose a spray paint in any color you like. Also, get a pair of protective gloves, and a big plastic sheet or a box, so you could paint only the lids and the knobs, not everything you have around while working.

You’ll also need a hammer and a nail or a bigger screw, to perforate the center of each lid, as you’ll lately screw the knobs in here.

How to Make It

Use the hammer and the nail to make a hole right in the middle of each lid, then wipe down the knobs and the lids to prepare them for painting.

Now you may paint them. If you decide to have lids and knobs in the same color, then you could just mount them together before painting. Keep them apart for painting if you’re going to do like I did, namely switching the knobs and using them with lids in different colors.

While painting, you’ll see how useful the gloves are, since you need to take each lid and button in your hand to spray paint them on their lower side first. Once covered their bottoms in paint, place them in the box and spray paint them all over. Le them dry, it will take like 15 minutes, during a hot summer day.Gold and copper were my choice, but there are a myriad of colors over there waiting for you to pick one of them.

Anyway, it looks really good. The gold button I mean, what did you think I was referring to???

Well, getting back to business, let me tell you that putting the knobs and the lids together is the easiest part IF you have proper materials. Do you remember what I said about having short screws, don’t you? If not, then remember this: look for short screws that fit perfectly in the knobs, otherwise your button won’t stay still on the lid.

And Here’s the Final Result!

20 minutes later, I had a few amazing containers for my colored beads. And looking at them right now, how they join their colors into a lovely image, gives me more ideas to turn into awesome DIY projects…

These decorative recipients look good enough to be displayed on my bookshelves…

I’m pretty happy with the result of this project. Actually, I didn’t expect these jars to turn into something so exquisite and so easy to integrate in my living room decor.

Is it awesome or what?

  1. Gabi these are so pretty and it was such an easy project. I would have thought for sure it was much more time consuming. We all want to have pretty containers to store our things in.

    1. Mary, it’s really easy to make then, and you can have them done even sooner if you gave a good spray paint that get dry easily.
